I am new here but not at the net. Have seen it evolve over so many years. The suggestion is to stick to the 3 letter TLD and still mantain compatability with ever increasing needs. trademark issues and adding a geographic element which should speed up things in regard to routing. I call it the Shekar System.

THe concept is to keep c=com o=org n=net e=edu g=gov m= mil and so on for the equivalence of the current TLDs. there are 26 letters to the alphabet so there is potential to add more. Thiis first letter of the new TLD should automatically represent whatever existing TLD (com, net etc)the second and third would be made up by the existing two letter country codes.(in the interests of fairness)
For example .ouk could represent an org domain in UK .nuk a UK net domain and so on. .cuk and .cus would represant  a .com in uk or the us. The numbers could be used for the net back office activity(2600 sub-options) where the individual need at English like famailarity  may not be as great. The '-' alone or in combination could serve at the at the second or third position on the TLD for sublinks on to further pointing.
The existing registered domains would have to be translated/transferred automatically over to this system....without charge to the current users. the uniqueness of say a .com could be phased over  the existing registered period or by some cut-off date in the future. In any case how many names are registered for a large multiple of years....one or two are the norm and ten is the upper limit. The existing user should be given the first option to choose the country letter combination by some fixed time period.
The other advantage is that trade-mark issues would become more specific and country defined... Most would not wish to register there specific doman all over the world.

This is basically using the redundancy in the existing three letter TLDs and expanding the possible domain name base by many multiples.

The jobs of routers could also be made 'easier' with the gegraphic encodeing buit-in.....

Another new TLD that could be considered is .MKT its a standard abbreviation for market/markets .
