IF you have purchased a Domain name in the ".com" extension,
you should have a one week period in which you can register the same name in any
new general TLD prior to registration from the general public. All the money and
time you have spent to build your business (most small businesses do not have a trademark)
should not be injured just because someone can have your same name in the new extension
by beating you to the registration.Unless you provide some procedure like this,
there in going to be a wild gold rush for at least the first 24 hours when the new
Domain(s) open. Some existing owners are going to be pretty upset that they could
not get through to register or the name was registered by someone else one second
after midnight and they could not get through until a few seconds later.
ICANN
should prohibit tranfer fees for those people wanting to move an existing Domain
name to a new regitrar. Allowing a registrar to impose a tranfer fee to move a Domain
name from that registrar to another registrar prevents the very competition in registrars
that ICANN has sought to encourage.
ICANN also needs to have a standard contract
that Registrars have to use in registering Domain names. Currently, some Registrars
use contracts that allow that registrar to cancel the registration of a Domain name
at any time. The public does not realize that the Domain name that they purchase
from those registrars are worthless. By allowing this to occur, ICANN is allowing
the public to be defrauded.
