Read the original RFC that discussed the various TLDs.
(RFC 1591) .org was NEVER INTENDED solely for non-profit organizations. It
was intended as a miscellaneous "catch-all" for companies/organizations/individuals
who didn't fit neatly into one of the other TLD categories. No one is arguing that
non-profits shouldn't have their own TLD -- just create a new one for them, rather
than taking away .org.
