You know, to have a monopoly, you do, I think, have to have a situation where one company provides the entire consumer population with all of the resources of a specified type being consumed... you get the idea.
Now... what resource, exactly, is Verisign providing? Are they providing us services of, say, making sure there's fair access to the pretty much unlimited supply of domain names? Are they providing, err... tech support? Is there any reason -at all- why only one company should be doing this, or any company at all? If it were coal, yes, there'd be a hard resource, specified limits on the quantities, and the ability to control access... but this is names - we don't have a service keeping us from naming our babies anything (including billie bob joe the fourty-second) so why our servers? Freedom!
