Internationally it would be far too difficult to prove that an organisation is a
registered non profit, as there are different regulations in almost every country.
And before anyone says "it should be reserved for American NPOs", well, .org is
an INTERNATIONAL TLD, so anyone in the world has the right to use it, not just Americans.
And
as for the alternatives, such as .org.uk, well, I don't see many Americans using
.us, so why should you force us to use our own suffixes?
As a reprasentative of
Virtualis Systems, a Hosting company in the US with representatives from all around
the world, we have been discussing this issue, and the general consensus is that
this decision is ill informed, an extreeme waste of money, and biased significantly
towards the USA.
