I obtained my domain, hodgman.org, in 1995. I selected
it as it fit my 'miscellaneous' purpose, which is in accordance with RFC1591 (see
below). My web site includes family news and information from around the world
and is a virtual gathering place for my far-flug family members. What's more,
my domain is a standard that family members and other correspondents use around the
world. Any change would cause great confusion. I would not approve of
a transition to a new domain or TLD. If there is a need for a TLD
for non-profit organizations, I suggest creating a new top-level-domain for them.
Alternatives include .npo, .npg, .nfp, etc. This would avoid hurting .org TLD
holders. Ref this exerpt from RFC1591 (March 1994) (http://rfc.net/rfc1591.html):
ORG - This domain is intended as the miscellaneous TLD for organizations that didn't
fit anywhere else. Some non-government organizations may fit here. Sincerely,
Dick Hodgman
