You are looking at it from an investor's viewpoint.Most of us are looking at it
for what is good for the Internet - not investors.
The Internet has to be more
important - only those with vested interests would disagree.
You also make several
misleading claims.
$35/year for a protectable piece of ineternet real estate is
a great deal for the buyer.
1 - a domain can be taken by UDRP. Unjust Domain
Robbery Process (my own viewpoint)
2 - they seem to 'lose' some by not checking
properly and poor procedures.
Most serious buyers of domain names would gladly
pay $100/year or more.
1 - You may be rich enough to throw money away - I am not.

- What do they do for a lifetime of $35/yr? Enter details once into a database -
big deal.
3 - You would say that - you are an INVESTOR - taking money out of the
rest of us.
