Subject: Why .npo was proposed

Message:

The only reason anybody proposed .NPO was because ICANN seems determined (for whatever reason...) to make .ORG into a genuine "registered non-profit only" TLD.

People have been pointing out that if they want to do that, it's a little too late to change .ORG (and it was never designed solely for non-profits, anyway!) and make a lot of people angry, and that a better choice would be to create a new TLD for them and start fresh.

I think most/many posters have a fairly decent idea as to why it's being done.  Few have missed the fact that .org is the tld that VeriSign is giving up.

Until this agreement was written, nobody even saw a *need* for a new TLD for non-profit organizations!  (As one poster put it, it's a 'solution' in search of a problem.)
