The only reason anybody proposed .NPO was because ICANN seems determined (for whatever
reason...) to make .ORG into a genuine "registered non-profit only" TLD.People
have been pointing out that if they want to do that, it's a little too late to change
.ORG (and it was never designed solely for non-profits, anyway!) and make a lot of
people angry, and that a better choice would be to create a new TLD for them and
start fresh.
I think most/many posters have a fairly decent idea as to why it's
being done. Few have missed the fact that .org is the tld that VeriSign is
giving up.
Until this agreement was written, nobody even saw a *need* for a new
TLD for non-profit organizations! (As one poster put it, it's a 'solution'
in search of a problem.)
