I am writing to publicly express my outrage at Verisign's recent behavior in installing their "Site Finder" site and accompanying top level wildcard DNS records for the .com and .net TLDs. I feel that this behavior constitutes a violation of the trust placed in Verisign by ICANN and the U.S. Commerce Department as maintainers of the .com and .net global registries and root servers. This action has caused numerous and widespread deleterious and negative consequences for Internet users across the U.S. and the world, as detailed in the recently published Internet Architecture Board Commentary Highlighting the Architectural Concerns on the Use of DNS Wildcards. I hereby propose that the maintenance of the .com and .net global registries and root servers be taken away from Verisign and be taken over instead by an independent, non-profit entity that is legally bound to act in the public interest, rather than profit-motivated self-interest. Whether this is a newly-created entity, or a pre-existing one (such as ICANN) is not important. What is most important is that the maintenance of the root servers and global registry be taken away from a private entity which has clearly demonstrated its propensity to act purely in profit-motivated self-interest regardless of globally detrimental consequences to Internet users everywhere.
