Dear ICANN,CAF welcomes and is pleased to support the drive to create a new standard
for non-commercial domain registration capable of engendering greater public trust
and stronger non profit organisation participation and transparency.
CAF is an
international non-governmental organisation which provides services that are both
charitable and financial. Wherever we work, we aim to help donors make the most of
their giving and charities make the most of their resources. With more than 75 years
of experience and a global network spanning five continents, CAF is committed to
increasing the resources of charities worldwide and helping individual and corporate
donors to maximise their generosity.
Validation is an essential part of our work,
as a means to secure and maintain donor trust and a positive perception of the world
of charity. In the future, we know we will increasingly look to new technology and
to e-philanthropy in particular, as a means of increasing the giving population,
as well as the diversity, regularity and generosity of donor support. Properly exploited,
the Internet seems destined to provide the essential tools for donor education, choice,
empowerment and global community.
However, as information explodes, so too will
the need for recognised standards and controls. Validation will need to be more visible,
more accessible and better understood in the Internet donor community. Non profit
organisations will need to embrace opportunities to demonstrate their effectiveness
and transparency to those wishing to offer them support. A new kind of online intermediary
will be needed to make sense of and balance the needs of either audience.
These
challenges are included in just some of the commitments of the Dot Org Foundation.
CAF has much to gain, and much it would be more than willing to lend in support of
this exciting new initiative.
Yours sincerely,
Sarah Hughes
