read in this interesting article:
MARINA DEL REY, Calif. (AP) -- To relieve overcrowding
in dot-com
addresses, the international organization in charge of Internet names
could select several new suffixes *by week's end*, including .biz and .web .
[snip]
"The
week will be very busy, with lots of intense discussions," said Esther Dyson, the
ICANN board's chairwoman. "I'm sure there are people who are going to be unhappy."
[snip]
An ICANN task force recommended that the board move slowly, picking
six
to 10 for now to test their effect on the global network and its users.
[snip]
Christopher
Ambler, whose company has been registering .web names,
plans to challenge ICANN's
authority if it picks one of the two competing proposals for .web. ICANN advisers
found his proposal defective but revived it when Internet users posted favorable
comments in discussion boards.
[snip]
MY COMMENT: actually Mr. Ambler (IOD) has
NEVER planned to challenge
ICANN (this is what he wrote in ICANN forums), since
he is confident
that IOD will get .web (he can't figure out a different solution).
However,
it is apparent that IOD's matter about .web
is considered very, very important,
and is reported in most
articles about new TLDs.
