The response ICANN had to the
application from .kids Corp relating to their inability to control all content really
doesn’t make sense. ICANN statements seem to imply that they have some
type of responsibility or potential liability for the content that may appear on
.kids sites. This is not the role ICANN was formed to perform. If the goals of
.kids Corp are going to be realized they will need to build public awareness. If
ICANN approves this application children’s safety online will be a topic of discussion
everywhere. Isn’t that what we want to happen. Giving this approval will send a message
to developers and development companies to “get to work” because if you can develop
a technology to restrict content there will be a pot of gold waiting. .kids Corp
could be the place where all good ideas to help this effort would be heard. Maybe
large companies with tremendous resources would work hard on bringing new technologies
to .kids in an effort to improve safety. Or maybe a company would like to be the
one who could say; "we developed the technology that made the Internet safe for kids”.
Can you think of a couple of company’s that would support that effort? For this to
ever be a reality you must make the first step by approving this application and
it may show the ICANN critics that your organization has the power to make changes
that are unquestionably positive for everyone regardless of your corporate affiliation
or financial motives. Ask yourself Isn’t this TLD the only one that’s really
important. Please don’t stop someone from trying to protect our children.
