The Yellow Pages Publishers
Association (YPPA) has reviewed the dotYP
proposal for a new gTLD and recommends
its adoption by ICANN.
YPPA is a not-for-profit trade association that represents
over 400 publishers, Yellow Pages specialist advertising agencies and suppliers worldwide.
The mission of YPPA is to lead, serve and grow the Yellow Pages industry and we look
at dotYP as an opportunity to enhance this mission.
YPPA recognizes dotYP’s benefits
of global access and unbiased competition for the small and large business alike.
The Yellow Pages medium today provides both print and electronic directories for
geographically and demographically targeted markets.
YPPA appreciates dotYP’s
respect for the present Yellow Pages infrastructure and it’s long established tradition
and legacy , while simultaneously providing a technology platform to extend
and enhance this legacy so that every business in the world can have electronic
visibility on the web via one universally accessible and efficient gTLD .
We
believe dotYP is a farsighted approach to equality, ubiquity and
competition.
EQUALITY
One of the problems of the Internet is that millions of small businesses
feel they've been left behind because they're late getting their own URL.
They
know that they want to be visible on the web, just as they're
visible in their
local directories. dotYP will provide web exposure for their
existing telephone,
address, business services, and even URL, without an
additional fee.
UBIQUITY
.dotYP is a global technology, not just a local directory. Developing
countries,
or even rural regions of the U.S. for that matter, want
assurance that they will
have a place on the web. We see dotYp as a highly
scalable directory with geographic
specificity. The vast
majority of businesses need to reach their own neighborhood,
not the world. We
think .dotYP creates a place on the Internet within reach of
local small
service businesses, which don't have a web strategy, and frankly,
may not
yet know what URL means.
COMPETITION
We particularly see
the competitive advantages as an organization of
literally hundreds of competing
and complementary yellow pages directories. dotYP has
developed a unique technology
and process which enables customers of existing paper
directories to benefit
through one powerful access technology. We feel this technology complements existing
Yellow Pages web sites and will benefit consumers, businesses, and publishers
alike.
To us, the compelling quality of dotYP is that it is a Win-Win for our
members and their related businesses and customers. Therefore, The Yellow Pages Publishers
Association (YPPA) highly recommends that ICANN approve the issuance of the dotYP
gTLD.
