Once again I want to urge ICANN to approve the creation of a top level domain: .co-op.
As the director of a non-profit organization that creates housing co-ops and assists
over 1,200 low-income housing co-ops with over 25,000 families, we are developing
programs to bring computers, computer literacy and the benefits of the internet to
the digitally underserved communities where we work. It is our experience that skills
such as management, bookkeeping, housing construction, building repair and community
organizing are successfully transmitted when they are learned by residents in the
process of securing and preserving their own affordable housing. We expect
to successfully address digital divide issues with these housing co-op residents
when computer and information technology issues are directly rlevant to their housing
needs and concerns. Having .co-op e-mail and web addresses for the housing
co-ops and their leaders will help in this effort and be a source of pride and distinction.
The .co-op TLD will also help us and others distinguish and identify cooperatives
and those who work in the co-op sector making the web easier to navigate and information
easier to obtain and trust.
