Several years ago there was a similar controversy regarding "toll free" number in the US. The original prefix for toll free numbers was 800. The phone companies wanted to introduce 888 and 877 to increase the number of toll free numbers available to the public. Companies like 1-800-flowers and 1-800-mattress had built their brand recognition on the 800 number. They viewed the new 888 and 877 numbers as a possible threat if a competitor took them.

Today, the new toll free prefixs are used widely and accepted by the public. The transition was not a problem. The public adapted to the change. The new toll free prefix system allowed my company to get a toll free number that is memorable and was not available prior to the addition of the new 888 prefix. I see similar benefits from the new gtld's.
