from afterNIC.com ... Today The URLy Indicator spoke
with Lou Kerner, CEO of dotTV, the newest contestant in the burgeoning global identity
industry. This Tuesday the company used an auction as the pricing mechanisms
for sale of their names. This use of market-based pricing in the primary market
was a first, and so far has yielded some impressive returns. In the first four
days of the auction, Kerner estimated that the site would move about a half million
dollars worth of inventory. He also reported that roughly half the registrations
were coming from outside the US, indicative perhaps of the non-US community's familiarity
with non-dotcoms. The .TV extension was originally granted as the country code
for Tuvalu, an obscure island country in the middle of the Pacific. Idealab
is behind the move to brand the extension as a non-geographic moniker and with that
kind of backing the domain is likely to get some attention. At press time,
dotTV and Idealab management were on their way to ABC studios to meet with Peter
Jennings.
