Verisign, with their implementation of wildcards in the .net and .com
zones has demonstrated that they are unfit to be in charge of *any*
ICANN sponsored tlds, and most definitely should be removed from
any role in running the .com and .net tlds. The surprise move by
Verisign shows either a lack of understanding of how the internet works
or contempt for the processes and procedures which have brought
the Internet to where it is today, and for those who have brought it
here.
I don't think the employees of Verisign are stupid, they surely have
a good understanding of how the internet works, so that leaves them
in contempt of those they are supposed to be serving. They have
violated the trust of thousands of independant network operators and
that of the public at large as well as my own trust, resulting in a
situation where DNS servers can no longer be relied upon to return
an answer to queries which are consistent with the root zones in the
.com and .net tlds.
Verisign's servers started lying to everybody about
the existence of hosts at non-registered domains, and large numbers
of networks then found it necessary to alter their own DNS software
to counter Verisign's lie. Those alterations vary according to who
implemented them, resulting in a fragmented DNS space, where the
answer given to a DNS query is wholly dependant upon whose
server you query. I believe that this is exactly the kind of situation
that ICANN was charged with preventing.
If Verisign is not removed from their postion in charge of maintaining
the .com and .net zones and the DNS restored to it's previous
functionality
the situation will only get worse. Remove Verisign now.
