VeriSign's manipulation of the DNS architechture is an act of war against the
entire Internet community. It undermines the whole community process. If GTLD
operators are allowed to make arbitrary decisions about how to implement DNS,
it's going to cause massive incompatibilities. This particular one is awful in
that it breaks the ability of software applications to know if a domain is
non-existent. Why should ISP technicians such as myself have to recode
applications to deal with this unexpected mess? Also, since this is for the
private financial gain of VeriSign at the expense of other businesses, it's
infinitely worse.
I have signed and I agree with the petition at http://www.whois.sc/verisign-dns/
