Dear ICANN –
Regarding the proposed rules governing companies that provide WHOIS privacy
services (as set forth in the Privacy and Policy Services Accreditation Issues
Policy document):
I urge you to respect internet users' rights to privacy and due process.
- Everyone deserves the right to privacy.
- No one’s personal information should be revealed without a court order,
regardless of whether the request comes from a private individual or law
enforcement agency.
As a private individual who owns a website, I find this proposal disturbing and
terrifying. As a woman, I am already subject to a barrage of threats on Twitter
when I dare to share my opinion; I shudder to think what my life would be like
if my home address were made available to every angry man with a vendetta who
didn't like something I posted to my website. I see no good that can come of
such a policy change. I urge you to do the right thing and keep private
information private. Thank you.
