Dear ICANN –
Regarding the proposed rules governing companies that provide WHOIS privacy
services (as set forth in the Privacy and Policy Services Accreditation
Issues Policy document):
I urge you to respect internet users' rights to privacy and due process.
- Everyone deserves the right to privacy.
- No one’s personal information should be revealed without a court order,
regardless of whether the request comes from a private individual or law
enforcement agency.
Private information should be kept private. Thank you.
And in addition to the generic message above, please just think about what
this will mean 5, 10, 20 years down the line. Some of the smartest
scientists, researchers, and philosophers of our time and times past have
illustrated through various means what dystopian society would result from
such a loss of privacy. Do you really want some irrational person, angry at
you for something you may or may not have done to them, finding out where
you and your family live? Do you really feel safe when your home, your safe
haven, is now public for anyone who doesn't like you to see? Please, don't
let this happen, for we may die, but our children will inherit this
terrible burden. No one deserves that.
Sincerely,
Julian Samaroo
