Dear ICANN –
Regarding the proposed rules governing companies that provide WHOIS
privacy services (as set forth in the Privacy and Policy Services
Accreditation Issues Policy document):
I urge you to respect internet users' rights to privacy and due process.
- Everyone deserves the right to privacy.
- No one’s personal information should be revealed without a court
order, regardless of whether the request comes from a private individual
or law enforcement agency.
Private information should be kept private.
In my case, privacy meant that I could criticize my government on
website on a domain I registered without fear of reprisal, as well as
avoid the invariable harassment from shady domain registrars and search
engine sales scammers who harvest personal information from WHOIS searches.
Please don't buy the entertainment industry's lobbyists argument that
privacy goes hand-in-hand with illegality. Their agenda is one-sided and
myopic and may very well eliminate the privacy to which everyone is
entitled.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Tim D.
