Subject: And Vint Cerf was "very conscious of the situation" too

Message:

And Vint Cerf on 12th August 2001:

"Richard,

ICANN is very conscious of the situation and has been in contact with
Afilias. I do not know what resolution will be found for this thorny
problem, but your input is much appreciated.

Vint"

If ICANN was aware of the problem, why did they allow Afilias to continue registering facially ineligible names?

And why did they not insist that these names were deleted, as proposed in the ICANN contract, since they failed to fulfil ICANN criteria and were therefore ineligible for registration?
