I'm secretary for the Saint
Cloud State University Pagan Alliance, a recognized university student organization.
I also administer the scsupagans.org domain name. We are not a for-profit organization,
but we are not a registered non-profit organization either. As long as ICANN
does not require us to have filed for some sort of non-profit organization status
from the government, this is fine, but otherwise, this plan is likely to harm our
organization and many like it. I have no problem with making sure .org domains
are not used for profit, but make sure either (a) they remain available to individuals
and small groups like ours, or (b) you introduce new top level domains to cover these
cases, and don't restrict .org until you do, and don't force anyone who currently
has a .org name to give it up.
