registry/registrar separation

It is interesting to note that ICANN only became an ardent supporter
of removing the
previous position of separation of registry and registrar functions -
AFTER- it became
clear that ICANN could become the monopoly holder of the root zone.
What better place
to control both functions!
Of course having that enforced separation would require ICANN to
chose... to become the
(likely to be highly profitable) registrar for the root zone OR to
own the root zone editorial
process - which it has claimed since its inception. They apparently
don't want to make that
choice. They want both.
