[alac] ALAC position on ICANN/Verisign deal?
The ALAC really should prepare a position on this in the next week. One concern about it is that it entrenches an above-market above-cost pricing structure in .com, a "sausage slicing" issue that doesn't affect any individual user too much but in aggregate extracts a great deal of money from us. Another is that it further isolates ICANN from oversight, of which they need more, not less. And if the issue is stability, it is clear from the recent statements of all the big registrars that ICANN will be buried in lawsuits if they try to go ahead with this. The uncertainty if ICANN tries to go ahead is immense.
