Dear ICANN –
Regarding the proposed rules governing companies that provide WHOIS privacy
services (as set forth in the Privacy and Policy Services Accreditation
Issues Policy document):
There is absolutely no legitimate business reason to force the revealing of
personal information through WHOIS. Any legitimate purpose for law
enforcement to be given access to the information will allow them to get a
court order for the information.
Everyone on the internet deserves the right to be anonymous. That is the
entire point of the web, to allow people the choice of who they want to
be. It is what makes it funny, useful, safe, and distinct from the "real"
world.
If people want to create communities where personal information is required
and validated, they have the freedom to do so. But we should also have the
freedom to create communities where you can be whoever you want and be
judged solely on the merit of your ideas and the quality of your work.
The internet is the first platform to allow the construction of truly
meritocratic communities in the history of the world. Please don't fsck
that up.
Thank you,
David Anderson
