I work for the Duchesne County School District in the Counseling Office of
Union High School. We have 820 students grades 9-12. I have a variety of
duties, many of which directly involve the students at Union and I also work
with programs that involve the other students in our district. Internet
safety has been a big issue for the past few years as access to computers
becomes easier and almost mandatory in the classroom. Our students use the
internet all the time and we are faced with issues of internet safety on a
daily basis. We have had numerous inservices aimed at students, parents and
educators to try to make the internet a safer place for our children. I can
think of nothing that is more important as we use the internet as a positive
tool for education. There are so many uses for good but they are almost
dwarfed by the potential for harm if there is not some type of regulation in
place. And it seems that it is getting harder and harder for technical
people to put the appropriate safe guards in place. I fully support what
you are trying to do. If you need an other documentation from our district I
can get it. Our technology specialists are particularly concerned and I know
would fully support any effort to regulate what is available on the internet
for the safety of our children.
Sincerely,
Ina Nielson
