To Whom It May Concern:
As a technology executive involved in the early internet (Sun Microsystems
and partnerships with Excite, Travelocity, and Verisign), a parent of three
teenagers, and the CEO and founder of a Generation-Y oriented website,
www.bluechowder.com ,
I have spent extensive time and money researching the internet experiences
of
teens and 20-something's. After reading some of their survey response
comments (below), you must agree that we have a responsibility to create a
Cyber-Safety Constituency!
*What concerns you about the Internet culture of today?
*
* The amount of porn and how accessible it is, and the amount of
sexual advertising. (Alex, age 18)
* A lot of great information and truths, but a perilous journey to
find it
(David, age 25)
* The access to obscene materials (Ryan, age 17)
* Overabundance of sexploitation (Paul, age 27)
*       MySpace (Jacob, age 20)
* It is allowing people an escape from reality and allowing people to
get involved in many dark habits including pornography and chatrooms (Caleb,
age 19)
* I'm worried about how easy it is to find garbage and how quickly it
finds you (Scott, age 27)
*What was your worst Internet experience?
*
* Unwanted sexual solicitations (Scott, age 27)
* Creepy guys (stalking me) on MySpace (Bethany, age 19)
*       MySpace.com (Jacob, age 20)
*       Pop-ups, especially for porn-related things (Lauren, age 18)
* MySpace: Unwanted soft-core pornography = advertisements (Caleb,
age 19)
* Looking for lyrics to a song by Hillsong United (and the site that
came up) had the lyrics mixed in with pornographic pictures and videos
(Rachel, age 23)
* Visiting (innocuous) sites and getting hit with Pop-up ads or banner
ads of (scantily clad and/or naked) women (Paul, age 27)
*Have you ever been exposed to unwanted sexual content on the Internet?
*
*       93% answered yes!
Please join me in supporting this absolutely necessary Cyber-Safety
constituency!
Sincerely,
Stephen Thesing
