All,
While we all appreciate input from the group related to the needs from
ICANN, I would appreciate that we stick to the mission of the ad-hoc
group for further fact finding, not the opinions of random bloggers and
magazines.
In view of the increase in domain tasting (definitions below), the GNSO
Council recently considered an Issues Report on Domain Tasting and
resolved to form an ad hoc group for further fact-finding on the effects
of this practice. The ad hoc group has prepared these questions to
assist in gathering facts and opinions, while inviting both qualitative
and quantitative input. The group would especially appreciate
statistical and other empirical evidence to support your responses, or
references to potential sources of information.

Let's face it, the registrars LOVE domain tasting!
Some charge a small amount of money for tasting and
then get the benefit of the registration for any kept
domains. It's almost a license to print money! Once an
API is built the incremental cost on the business is
small compared to the potential upside! You can almost
hear the registrars cash registers clicking away as
more and more tasting takes place.
If everyone benefits who is screaming about domain
tasting? The copyright/intellectual property lawyers
are having real problems with domain tasting. By the
time they manage to get their C&Ds and cases together
the domain is no longer registered. It's a moving
target and no one to sue!
