Hi all,
I think Mawaki has a point.
As much as I remember the establishment of the working group was not announced
on ICANN's homepage. I believe that there are several people from the different
constituencies and from the wider Internet community, that could clearly
contribute by joining this WG.
I think we should open the WG for more people to join (I understand the rules
allow it), and have a public announcement calling for people to join the WG.
Furthermore, we should accordingly postpone the Chair's elections, so that the
new members would be able to vote and/or be nominated.
You know, the community has been waiting for several years for IDN to happen.
We are coming to a point where we need to make it happen, and deal with the
crucial part of policy that needs to be resolved.
Let's try to make it right, and get all the valuable inputs we can get.
All the best,
Yoav

Mawaki and all,
Just to recapitulate the history a bit, the launch of the WG stems from a
resolution by the GNSO Council on 18 May this year:
http://gnso.icann.org/resolutions/#200605
The resolution,20060518-04, reads initially:
"That the GNSO Council forms a GNSO working group of volunteers,
conversant with the IDN issues raised in the IDN issues report."
For those having volunteered to this working group, a mailing list was
established on 15 June, see:
http://forum.icann.org/lists/gnso-idn-wg/msg00000.html
I hope this can serve to refresh our collective memory.
Very best regards and wishing you a nice weekend
Olof

Hello all,
I'm a bit confused about this (just read the whole email) and would need
some clarification, if you will. In fact I've never been cleared about what
rules govern the membersship of this WG, when they have been designed and if
this was publicized, or what is their design basis (preexisting rules,
bylaws, etc.) As a matter of fact, I was kind of assuming that this was
intended to the Council members, though I have started doubting about that
with the nomination of the candidates chair (in fact, I did ask the question
in one of my postings on this topic.)
Anyway, the thing is I don't remember of any public call to potential
participants outside the council to volunteer for the WG, and I don't even
remember forwarding such call to my constituency list (based on the
aforementioned assumption.) Now, we have an unanticipated election starting
within two days of announcement. It may be that my memory is playing tricks
with me, so could I respectfully request the Chair Bruce Tonkin and/or the
GNSO Staff to clarify/remind me of the rules of design and engagement of
this whole process, beginning with the formation of this WG, and help me
understand if all people who could have joined were reasonably given the
opportunity to do so, whether there was a deadline for doing so or they may
still do so, etc.
In anticipation, thank you very much.
Regards,
Mawaki
