Dear Alex,

If I understand correctly, the ISO 639-2 is only used to identify the
appropriate abbreviation to be used to identify certain languages as
explained here: http://www.icann.org/en/translations/. It is not linked to
which languages a document will be translated in.

In contrast to the above, one finds ISO 639-2 so 'generic', for
example, refers to "Germanic languages",  "Afro-Asiatic languages",
"Romance languages", etc) how applicable is this with regard to
translations? - since hard for me to foresee a  translation into/from
those generalised languages. I thought UN(ESCO) language
identification route was discussed?
