Information ahead of the call in a few hours time.
Dear members of the Reserved Names Working Group,
I am forwarding to you a summary of a discussion that took place during
the most recent GNSO IDN Working Group, on 27 February. It came about as
a result of reporting into that group by Tina Dam, ICANN staff, and
responses made by Marilyn Cade and Avri Doria who are members of both
working groups.
This note is for information, and does not require a response to the
GNSO IDN Working Group.
Best regards,
Maria Farrell
GNSO Policy Officer
*Summary of discussion on RNWG at GNSO IDN Working Group, 27 February,
2007 *
Tina Dam (ICANN?s IDN Program Director) relayed concerns expressed at
the recent APTLD meetings in Bali that the Reserved Names Working Group
was moving quickly and as yet without input from the ccNSO, APTLD or a
cc consortium. CC?s at the APTLD meeting are concerned to reserve
localized equivalents of the current country codes, but as that list
does not exist, it is difficult to reserve those names. The CC?s
suggested that ccNSO and GAC may wish to consider the issue of reserving
country names at the second level also. Steve Crocker (SSAC) echoed
these concerns, citing technical reasons.
Marilyn Cade responded that the Reserved Names Working Group intent was
primarily to study the issues and make recommendations for longer study
and analysis, unless the issues were very clear cut. She noted that the
Working Group is to propose recommendations, but it is up to the Council
to make decisions. Nonetheless, outreach to such groups is critical to
inform the WG?s work.
Avri Doria noted that the Reserved Names Working Group sub group on
geographic names has not produced significant output yet. While it is
moving quickly, it still has to take into account other activities and
concerns. Avri put in the friendly amendment to the group during its
Marina del Rey meeting reserving all CC- - (i.e. character character
dash dashes), and specifying that no changes should be made without
reference to standardization activities such as IETF and appropriate
IANA registration. i.e. We currently only use xn-- for tagged IDNs, but
all CC-- are reserved; e.g. ax-- or xx-- . While these should remain
reserved, it should be possible to define a new tag and encoding method
and then go though a standardization process and IANA.
Subsequently, the Chair, Chuck Gomes, reminded the sub groups to take
advantage of the liaison to the ccNSO - Minjung Park, email:
parkmj@xxxxxxxxxx <mailto:parkmj@xxxxxxxxxx> - for assistance in getting
input and engagement from the ccNSO.
