WG Members,

 

At its last meeting, the GNSO Council adopted a resolution on the
recommendations outlined in the WHOIS Survey Requirements WG Final Report.
One such recommendation is to send the results of the compiled survey to the
Thick WHOIS WG for its consideration and deliberations.  The survey was
created in response to a staff paper on possible technical requirements for
a future WHOIS system.  The survey's scope was only from a technical
perspective and it did not intend to define or suggest the policies or
operational rules that should apply.

 

I suspect several members of this WG have already seen the WSWG final
report, but the notification here is primarily to fulfill the recommendation
adopted by the GNSO Council.  Of specific interest to you is Section 4.14 -
Requirement 9 - TLDs Operating Thick WHOIS (pages 51-52).  It contains a few
questions about the topic of Thick WHOIS.  Keep in mind that these questions
were first developed in May of 2012, with several events overtaking the
current relevance of survey.  The first question asks participants about
standardized tools for migrating from a thin to thick WHOIS, and the second
asks about timeframes for performing the migration.

It is understood that this WG has submitted its Final Report to the GNSO
Council.  I do not suspect that the survey results will influnce your
report, but it may be useful as this effort progresses through the Council
and the ICANN Board.  Further, the survey results in the WSWG Final Report
will also be shared with staff that will be tasked with the implementation
of the recommendations for Thick WHOIS, provided that the report is adopted
by the GNSO Council / ICANN Board.
