In brief, the lifting of price controls could spell disaster for smaller website developers, who need to be able to plan well beyond ten years. The fact there can be only one registry for each TLD is precisely why ICANN must retain strict pricing controls. I am beyond dismayed that rather than undergo a full consultation to establish firm policy in this area, the ground seems to be slipping from under our feet each time an agreement is due for renegotiation (first .net 10% increments, now this). I fail to see why registry and ICANN fees cannot be indexed to inflation, a basket of stockmarkets or other suitable economic indicator. The registry should be free to generate more income, in real terms, through encouraging registration of greater numbers of domains, not through near-blackmail of existing registrants.
