Hello,
As a website owner, I object to the idea that Verisign should be
required to police .net websites for copyright issues.
Copyright varies by jurisdiction, and each jurisdiction that regulates
copyright has legal means in place to reasonably protect it. A private
registrar should not be required to be at the beck and call of anyone
who makes frivolous, or even real complaints regarding copyright. This
belongs in the venue of the court system.
Frivolous copyright complaints are not simply an imagined threat; they
are a significant part of the Internet landscape. Copyright issues
should not be handled by a company with something to lose (the right to
be a registrar), but by the governments of the jurisdictions involved.
There is simply too much possibility for a chilling effect in
over-regulation by a private registrar for reasons of self-protection.
Thank you,
Alex Kates
