Generic top-level domains (gTLDs) may have potential advantages, but they
will certainly cause massive confusion if they include common file
extensions (e.g., ".exe") -- especially ones found at the ends of countless
URLs (e.g., ".pdf").
Ars Technica reported the objection "To date, staff has not been able to
locate a list of common file extensions that is generally acknowledged to be
authoritative." ICANN could choose a comprehensive list (e.g.,
http://www.filext.com/), but at a minimum should prohibit the obvious ones
(html, htm, php, asp, pdf, txt, doc, exe, jpg, jpeg, png, gif, tif, js, pl,
pm, mov, avi, mp3).
