[npoc-voice] RE: NPOC Call tomorrow Jan. 10 at 2100 UTC
Greetings Everyone and Happy New Year. I wanted to keep you in the loop about some high-level efforts taking place in the United States regarding concerns about the launch of the new gTLDs. Our organization, the Council of Better Business Bureaus (a nonprofit with small businesses as members) has been involved in the Congressional hearings on the new gTLDs. as has the YMCA as you know. As a follow up to those hearings, a great number of brand holders including large and small companies, nonprofits and consumer groups have been involved in meetings with the Department of Commerce, the Federal Trade Commission and ICANN. Attached are letters to ICANN and the U.S. Secretary of Commerce the summarize our concerns and some recommendations to ICANN for improvements. The letters are on behalf of CRIDO-Coalition for Responsible Internet Domain Oversight that was organized by the Association of National Advertisers. Since NPOC works within ICANN, your voice is particularly valuable, and I know many of the issues are aligned with the concerns of the nonprofit community. Please let me know if you agree with the issues raised in these letters and would like to help with this effort to seek changes within ICANN. Thank you very much Amber for your continued leadership and organizational prowess. And my goodness it snuck up on me. Our next conference call is tomorrow, January 10, 2012 at 4pm EST (21:00 UTC). Please email me directly if you require the conference call number. The passcode is 5913. The big topic for tomorrow's call will be our long-awaited elections and to begin soliciting nominations. The list of open positions can be found on our website: http://npoc.org/npocelections.html. You may either nominate yourself or someone else (and an email to this list will suffice). The new gTLD program is still set to launch Thursday, January 12th. The UDRP is up for consideration and we need to formulate our message. WHOIS is another topic that we need to solidify our message.
