[npoc-voice] Nominations Open for Civil Society Reps to 1Net Steering Committee: Mon. 9 Dec. deadline to nominate a civil society
Dear members, As part of its policy agenda, and in addition to the policy agenda within the narrow ICANN ´s remit, NPOC is also supporting the E-engage initiative together with other partners. This is an initiative that is linked to broader policy issues related to Internet Governance. Our Policy Chair, Rudi Vansnick, will soon share the E-engage background papers and other written materials displaying our vision issues related to this broader Internet Governance debate. Of course, our membership expertise about Internet Governance-related issues is also a valuable asset we have as a community. On the other hand, you might be aware that there is a lot going on related to the organization of the upcoming Brazilian meeting about Internet Governance that will take place in April next year year. Civil Society as a whole is given the opportunity to participate on an equal footing in the organization of the event along with representatives from the business sector, the academia and the technical community. 01Net is the name of the platform entrusted with gathering or articulating all committees and providing a voice to all sectors (http://1net.org). NPOC as part of NCSG within ICANN and as a community that promptes a broader policy agenda linked to Internet Governance issues is actively involved following the debates and seeking to have representatives. As of today, the process is at its very early stage. Committees are being formed and calls for nominations are being published. It is a wonderful opportunity for us to get involved as representatives of the Not-for-Profit community and as a result, have our voice heard, promote our E-Engage policy agende and provide other valuable inputs steeming from the expertise of our membership on Internet governance issues. The information we have so far is that there will be a Multistakeholder High-level Committee which "will be set up the high level political tone and objectives of the conference. Committee members will engage on a global level with stakeholders to encourage participation in the conference and maximize its chances of success". There will be a Multistakeholder Executive Committee which will "own the full responsibility of organizing the event, including: defining conference purpose/agenda, managing invitations, organizing input received by March 01 into a coherent set of proposals for the conferees to address, managing conference proceedings and process and directing all communications activities pre-during-post conference" and finally, There will be a 1Net Steering committee. At this stage, nominations are received to be part of the committees. First of all, as NPOC community members, I would like to encourage you to subscribe to the mailing list of 1net (https://nro.net/mailman/listinfo/i-coordination) in order to be informed of matters related to this event but also to have the opportunity to be active and provide inputs at your convenience. Additionally, below, you can read an email from Robin Gross that was sent yesterday where she forward an call for nomination to the Steering Committee (third committee) with the December 9th deadline. NPOC Executive Committee has decided to nominate Klaus Stoll who has been the early promotor of the I-Engage initiative and the subscriber, to be considered as candidates to seat on the 1Net Steering Committee bearing in mind what Robin Gross states clearly "of course it would helpful to know just what 1Net has been set up to do and what is the scope of its work before agreeing to serve on its steering committee, but those things haven't been set yet - its largely a chicken and egg paradox. Therefore, those people who are most interested in shaping the form and direction of 1Net should consider serving on its initial steering committee". Therefore as of today, even if do not know what will be the mission of the 1Net Steering Committee, we do know it would be a wonderful opportunity for us to have NPOC representatives in it, if appointed, and hopefully be part of this movement that will shape the 1NET and promote the E-Engage initiative. This is why, on one hand, I would encourage you not only to support our nominations but also to nominate other NPOC members to be candidates or to self-nominate yourselves as this is allowed. As a community, I believe we need to show a good presence at this nominating stage in order to increase our chances to have any of the NPOC nominated candidates actually appointed in the Steering Committee and eventually be able to have some impact on thé agenda of the conference. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me or any of the Executive Committee members. Therefore the coalition of civil society networks (NCSG, APC, Diplo, IGC, Best Bits) is working to nominate 5 representatives for civil society to the 1Net Steering Committee. We are using the same committee and process that we used to nominate the 2 civil society representatives to the High Level Panel on IG last week. Therefore, we are now accepting nominations for civil society representatives to the 1Net Steering Committee until Monday 9 December 23:59 UTC. You can nominate someone else or yourself by posting the nomination to this list before then. Before you nominate another please be sure that your nominee has already agreed to serve on the 1Net Steering Committee if she/he is selected by the larger coalition as one of the five civil society representatives. Also bear in mind that we will be similarly impaneling the civil society representatives to the Brazil meeting organizing committees in the coming weeks also, but the 1Net Steering Committee's establishment has a tighter deadline so we are dealing with it first. Of course it would helpful to know just what 1Net has been set up to do and what is the scope of its work before agreeing to serve on its steering committee, but those things haven't been set yet - its largely a chicken and egg paradox.
