After careful analysis of both the First proposed .COM Agreement, the
Revised proposed .COM Agreement and comments already posted, I have to
conclude there are two deal breakers:
1) the right by VeriSign to raise prices 7% in 4 of the 6 years of the
Agreement from a starting base of $6.00
2) the significantly strengthened (from the current .COM Agreement)
presumptive renewal rights
ICANN has perhaps its last and only chance to forever free itself from
continually being under the thumb of the "schoolyard bully", VeriSign...and
it should take that chance! ICANN should continue with the litigation and,
once and for all, punch the bully in the nose!!
ICANN should not settle its winable lawsuit with VeriSign by lining its own
pockets, as well as VeriSign's, with cash directly from the pockets of
everday Internet users.
ICANN has two choices:
1) Settle the VeriSign lawsuit with this new .COM Agreement and enjoy your
new found riches...but in the process lose all self respect and the respect
of people around the world.
2) Continue the VeriSign lawsuit and, win or lose, be a little less
rich...but gain self respect and the respect of people around the world for
doing the right thing.
Here's hoping you do the right thing.
