The idea that the United Nations bureaucracy or a dictator state could one day
control the DNS makes me as a technologist cringe. But this possibility is made
more likely if ICANN doesn't have enough financial independence. Imagine if in
2012 .com fell into the hands of the country, which do not consider freedom
fundamental? There would be tens of dictators interested. Censorship would
escalate to a whole other level. And they WILL try to take a chance. It
wouldn't only be search engines like Google and Yahoo collaboration that limit
access to content. Censorship would exist in the infrastructure level itself!
We don't want .com turning into .communism. So the presumptive renewal, in my
mind, is a good thing.
