It would be helpful if ICANN could provide personnel and some funding to run
a training workshop for the members of the Pacific Chapter of the Internet
Society (PICISOC) who are able to attend the PacINET conference in November
6-11, 2011, to be held in American Samoa. In fact, it would be helpful to
raise the profile of ICANN within the Pacific by their regular attendance
and participation in our chapters annual conference programme, updating
members on the latest developments from the three meetings held each year.
It might also encourage more Pacific members to apply for ICANN fellowships.

The PacINET conference is the only opportunity that PICISOC gets each year
to meet with as many members who can gather for our annual meeting and
conference. Our members come from the 22 countries in the Pacific that our
organisation represents to discuss the development and governance of the
internet in the Pacific. A major objective for our Board is to enable our
members to become participators in programmes that can ultimately benefit
their economies. The problem of access to these types of training
opportunities is compounded by the fact that many of our members find it
difficult to even get to their own organisation's conference. The cost of
travel between island nations being the major barrier.

The Chapter is continually seeking ways and means of not only obtaining
training support but also to offer members the opportunity to participate
either in person or virtually. Learning more about ICANN and the new gTLD
program is an important development issue for the people of the Pacific.
