Rafik,

Perhaps we can agree that the reason for setting up this WG
is the fact that presenting an application for a new gTLD is
a little expensive, particularly for non-profit entities and NGOs?

The application fee might conceivably be considered as the
most significant up-front expense such an applicant must
cope with. If it will be heresy to address this issue in the
discussions and output of this WG, then at least we might
consider the application fee as worthy of an initial analysis
that helps us all clearly understand the factors that have
provoked the problem we are supposed to tackle.

Tony

Rafik,

You said the issue of « application fees » is not under the scope of this working group.

As per the Board resolution, we are asked to develop a sustainable approach to providing support to new gTLD applicants requiring assistance in applying for and operating new gTLDS. One of the possible ways to provide support to apply for a new gTLD is to reduce the application fees.

I'd agree

If the application fee is the issue then it needs to be addressed

Saying it's out of scope isn't going to help

Unless of course Rafik feels that talking about the fee in relation to the DAG in general is outside scope ..

Rafik??

Michele

I do think that rejecting the issue that way is not constructive.

Hello Everyone,

we have Avri and Evan nominated as co-chairs and you can nominate someone or yourself till tomorrow confcall and the we can appoint the co-chairs.

Regarding discussion about WG objectives, it will be helpful to propose concrete rewording. the best will be to approve the charter tomorrow too and then ALAC and GNSO council to approve it too . about the applications fees, I think that will be the most polemic part and I am not sure that is under the scope of our WG. We had a long discussion within GNSO council about that specific point: "Resolved, that the GNSO Council supports the formation of a joint SO/AC working group to respond to the Board’s request by developing a sustainable approach to providing support to new gTLD applicants requiring assistance in applying for and operating new gTLDS, keeping in mind the GNSO Implementation guideline to recover the cost of new gTLD applications and on-going services to new gTLDs, and the goal of not creating further delays to the new gTLD process;"

Dear all,
Action items from our call today:

1. If you haven’t filed a Statement of Interest with Glen, please do so (see separate mail from Glen on this)

2. Volunteers (and/or nominations) sought for chair(s) or co-chairs for the WG, to be appointed at a future meeting. Please consider this and send an email to the list if interested.

3. The draft WG charter distributed earlier is now also available for editing on the Wiki – it generated much discussion (on focus, sequence, priorities, language…) and the conclusion was to continue on the list and on the Wiki to get it agreed by the end of next week. The Wiki is at https://st.icann.org/so-ac-new-gtld-wg/ .

4. It was resolved to have 1.5 hour weekly calls, starting next week. A Doodle poll will be set up to find the most suitable time – expect a separate mail on that.

Very best regards
Olof
