On .asia initiative
The .asia initiative presents a unique and
well-timed opportunity to address the real needs of a huge, diverse and
fast-growing chunk of Internet universe. With the growing identification of
older gTLDs (some now sTLDs) as specifically US entities, the increased
intervention of US courts in disputes related to gTLDs based on US soil, and
the ever- growing demands for diversification and internationalization of
Internet as witnessed in WSIS and other international forums, it is vitally
important that such viable and practicable initiatives be welcomed and
supported within the present structure of Internet. To be sure, the
growth of ccTLDs is a partial response to such needs, but Internet
experience demonstrates that ccTLDs alone do not address all the
requirements of the increasing trends of globalization and
regionalization. As a ccTLD manager joining the .asia initiative, I hope
that the Internet community and ICANN will appreciate the strategic
importance of the success of this initiative for the smooth evolution of
Internet. Siavash Shahshahani Director, .IR
