What a very, very silly idea. Far from 'protecting' children or anyone else
it would make porn much easier to locate, drive 100's of 1000's of dollars
offshore, outside of the USA, and kill the livelihood of many, many who
already own clearly labelled, easily filtered adult domains that have been
established for years. Offering them a 'replacement' .xxx domain simply is
no help for many given that oh so many rely on good search engine traffic
and established links in to their existing sites.

A FAR more sensible idea would simply be to have 'safe' site with something
like a .kids domain. Other than that educate parents on the merits of very
easy to obtain, easy to install and secure 'nanny' software.

The .xxx appeals to only two kinds of people. Those on an anti-porn crusade
who really have not thought the whole thing though properly and very big
adult businesses who know that the move will close down lots of smaller
competition so that their profits will rise dramatically with the loss of
lots of competition.

A move to put adult domains on .xxx will be financially crippling for many,
is unworkable, will simply drive many adult sites offshore, will still offer
no better protection for children and finally is very open to interpretation
as to what constitutes an 'adult' site. And of course it gives a very, very
false sense of security. There are many sites on the Internet far worse for
children IMHO than adult sites. I do not want my child seeing adult sites
but I also do not want them to view many other things on the Internet. Not
only will .xxx NOT stop them from viewing 'porn', it will also leave many
other sites easily accessible that are just as unsuitable if not more so.
More naive parents will think their children 'safe' when this is far from
the case. The ONLY resolution to that is good nanny software or the creation
of child friendly sites through something like a .kids TLD.

Tony Brodie (concerned parent with strong family ties in the USA)
