Great point! People, especially newcomers like many of the posters on
this thread, tend to assume everything they are seeing now is hot and new.
Just by viewing the list and seeing the 1995 and 96 dates one quickly gets a sense
of how LONG NewTLD's have been discussed in the Internet community. Many people
(Christopher Ambler of .WEB being just one) have spent YEARS contributing to the
discussions and trying to get their new registries off the ground. Ignoring long-standing
proposals and registries would be an inappropriate, unfair, and arrogant thing for
ICANN to do. That said, I am not convinced at this time ICANN will ignore the
more established alternate registries. A lot will happen in the next few months
to determine this.
