One way to reduce costs is to turn it around:

You might make a rule in the agreement between the company claiming
the domain and the registrar that the company clearly states that
it does not already holds (either by itselve or one of its subsidiaries) a TLD. By breaking this agreement they would loose
all claim on the TLD.
