You could get good .com names in 1998 and even in 1999. In fact you still can, if you use your imagination (and I do not mean my*.com, about*.com that NSI tries to sell). And you are absoluteluy right: new TLDs now, will mean a new request for again newer ones in a few years. There is no end to it. So don't begin.
