"ICANN Directors all post their email addresses on the ICANN site.  Part of serving as an ICANN Director is making oneself available to the public via email.  Why shouldn't candidates be required to do the same thing?"

Because it makes the addresses available for spammers' spiders to grep them.  Put up mail-to links, instead, and keep the candidates' addresses secure from greppers.  Once they are *elected*, then their addresses can become public.
