Hello,
As has been noted by many others, Verisign is supposed to be acting
as the trustee of the .com and .net gTLDs. As such, their actions
should be dictated by the interests of the Internet community and
the public at large. It is clear that instead, Verisign is operating
with only its bottom line in mind. While disappointing, this is
hardly unexpected given that Verisign is a for-profit, publicly
traded company with shareholders who expect nothing less.
Hopefully this latest incident will emphasize the point that
Verisign is unfit to continue in its role as the administrator of
the .com and .net domains. Please take whatever actions are
necessary to (a) compel Verisign to remove its SiteFinder service
immediately, and (b) reprimand Verisign for its unilateral and
deceptive action by terminating its contract and thereby revoking
its right to administer the .com and .net gTLDs.
I would also suggest that ICANN carefully review the terms of the
contract(s) signed by any new organizations to ensure that future
abuse of this nature is clearly prohibited contractually and that
violations of those contractual terms carry significant financial
and/or other appropriate penalties.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
Jeff Aitken
