whois privacy

As a website owner, I urge ICANN to keep whois privacy protections in
place. There are many, many real harms that can come to website owners
through the removal of such protections. Where there is alleged
wrong-doing, the courts in most countries have in place policies to
properly balance privacy with revealing the contact information (in the
U.S., via court order or warrant). There is no need, either to support
legitimate copyright complaints or investigations into criminal
activities, to require domain name registries to turn over or publicly
post such information in the absence of such orders or warrants. If
there are countries that lack these mechanisms, then the proper solution
is to work to put these approaches into place in those countries, not to
impose harm on all of the legitimate website owners.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
